Les Escaliers du Montmartre, Brassai
Brassai was Hungarian, but lived most of his life in Paris.
He is most famous for photographs taken at night (see the
picture of Pont Neuf) and the Paris underworld. This photograph appears
to have been taken very early in the morning,
since there is no one to be seen on the street.The Montmartre district is
on a hill overlooking the city to the south.
I have been on similar sets of stairs (see the picture "Paris, 14 July 1950"
which is taken just off the Place du Tertre)
but I have never found this exact spot. I believe this is looking
north away from the city
